History of our chorus

SouthCity Soundz was formed in 1991, under the name of South City Harmony Chorus as an 'offshoot' of the Greater Auckland Chorus.

Initially members met at local homes until a permanent venue was found at Papatoetoe Town Hall. The Chorus was chartered in 1992 and entered its first competition in the same year. Shortly after this, the chorus acquired its risers from the USA. That was a major fund raising project achieved with the help of a grant from the ASB bank.

In 1994 the chorus attended the national competition in Christchurch and achieved 3rd place and most improved chorus award.

In 2002, we were fortunate to have obtained the services of Melody Lowe as our director. After two years with SCHC, Melody was invited to become director of GAC. Again, fortunately for us, her daughter Jocosa Lowe was able to step into the breach. Under her directorship, we achieved the Small Chorus award (under 35 members on stage at competition) and recognised as the Most Improved Chorus in 2005 at the Wellington competition.

There were great changes during this time: the chorus moved its venue to Riverhills Primary School in Pakuranga. Then “Soundz of Counties” chorus and us combined to form “SouthCity Soundz”. At this time the venue was changed again to St John The Evangelist School to accommodate the members coming from South Auckland.

The chorus is now pleased to welcome our new director Angela Tsai, who is also the Auckland Regional Young Women In Harmony co-ordinator. We hope to grow from strength to strength in the future.
